He asked for a little space. The bucket took it literally.
A Little Space
Daniel stood beside the excavator with a rolled drawing under his arm. Across the garden, Rina was measuring a patch of ground where a new bench would go.
“It’s a good spot,” she said. “Morning sun, afternoon shade, and a view of the pear tree.”
Daniel unrolled the drawing on a folding table. A rectangle marked the bench; another showed the area to be prepared around it.
“I’ve brought the dimensions,” he said.
Rina studied the page. “Could we have a little more space beside it?”
Daniel looked at the machine. “My bucket has a rather generous idea of ‘a little.’ How much did you have in mind?”
“That’s what I’m trying to work out.”
Two Cups on a Drawing
The bench would seat two people. Daniel pointed to its outline and the space already marked around it.
“There’s room for the bench here, and the path meets it from this side.”
Rina nodded, but her finger stayed on the blank patch beside the rectangle.
“One of our visitors, Mrs Hart, comes with her brother,” she said. “She uses a wheelchair. They like to sit together and argue about the pear tree.”
“What’s wrong with the tree?”
“She thinks it needs pruning. He thinks it needs an apology.”
Rina took two empty coffee cups from the end of the table. She set one on the drawing, over the bench, and placed the other beside it.
“I’d like her to have a place next to him, facing the same way. Not down the path while he sits here.”
Daniel moved around the table to see. The second cup rested beyond the marked edge.
Room Beside the Bench
“Let’s look at the actual spot,” he said. “We’ll need to think about how she gets there as well.”
They carried the drawing across the grass. Rina held one end of a measuring tape while Daniel extended the other. Together they looked at the approach from the path and the space alongside the proposed bench.
“What if we bring the prepared area out to here?” Daniel asked. He indicated a point farther from the bench. “Then we can show the extra room on the plan.”
Rina stepped back to imagine the chair beside it. “That gives them the same view. Could we check the route with the person approving the work too?”
“Absolutely. We’ll confirm the layout before I start.”
Rina called the project lead. They reviewed the proposed area and the approach together, then agreed on the marked plan for this stage of the work. Daniel noted the changes while Rina held the paper against the breeze.
“A little more space,” he said, drawing the new line.
“A little more specific,” she replied.
The First Scoop
After the work area had been prepared, Daniel climbed into the cab. Rina watched from the designated viewing area as the bucket lifted its first scoop of earth. A few crumbs of soil fell back onto the dark ground.
At their break, Daniel joined her at the folding table. Rina had filled the two cups with coffee and placed them side by side.
“Will Mrs Hart and her brother agree about the tree now?” he asked.
“I doubt it. But they’ll have a comfortable place to continue.”
Daniel looked towards the pear tree. “For the record, I think it owes them both an apology.”
Rina handed him a cup. “You can tell them when the bench is ready.”
