Interlude: A Gospel Foreshadow

The story of Ruth is a miniature of the Gospel of salvation.

It reflects the four Gospels, the welcome proclaimed in Acts, and the truths unfolded in the apostolic letters. Naomi represents Israel, while Ruth symbolizes the nations outside of Israel. Both find salvation only in the name of Jesus, as Peter declared on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out. This narrative, though set in ancient times, foreshadows the universal invitation of the Gospel and the unity of Jew and Gentile in Christ.
Verse: “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)

Why This Story Matters

The story of Naomi and Ruth is not told merely for Naomi’s household, but for every household of faith.

It is a testimony of how God works through ordinary families to reveal extraordinary redemption.
Ruth’s faithfulness as the bride prefigures the Church, the Bride of Christ, who awaits the return of her Bridegroom with steadfast devotion.

This narrative reminds us that covenant loyalty and waiting in hope are at the heart of God’s people across all generations.
Verse: “Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her… that she would be holy and blameless.” (Ephesians 5:25–27)

The Purpose of This Journey

The book was written to show that faith is not an easy path.

The journey of faith involves famine, loss, waiting, and testing, yet the process of shaping faith is God’s true purpose. When faith is refined and matured, it results in genuine worship and selfless concern for others. Ruth’s embrace of Naomi’s God and Boaz’s sacrificial love demonstrate that true faith produces a life that reflects God’s character—mercy, compassion, and worship in spirit and truth.
Verse: “So that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:7)

A Call to Persevere

The message of Ruth calls us to remain faithful even when every road seems blocked.

In such moments, we are urged not to look outward in despair but inward to God’s presence and promises. Often, the people around us—overlooked and unexpected—become hidden channels of blessing, just as Naomi initially failed to see Ruth as the very key to her restoration. Therefore, the story calls every believer to trust God’s unseen hand, to endure, and to recognize that His redemptive work often comes through those standing quietly at our side.
Verse: “But Ruth said, ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.’” (Ruth 1:16)
