Writing to remember, sharing to inspire

Every flight was successful. Some inspections happened outside.

Grandma built airplanes.

Grandpa tested them.

Neither trusted instruction manuals.

The manuals seemed optimistic.

Grandma preferred experience.

Grandpa preferred parachutes.

Together they had developed an efficient system.

Whenever Grandma finished another invention…

Grandpa packed sandwiches.

Then packed a parachute.

The order never changed.

“The airplane is ready,”

Grandma announced.

Grandpa nodded.

“So is my exit.”

They climbed into the cockpit.

The engine started beautifully.

This immediately made Grandpa suspicious.

Machines that behaved perfectly were clearly planning something.

The airplane climbed higher.

Everything sounded normal.

The wings remained attached.

The propeller continued negotiating with the air.

Birds flew beside them.

One bird saluted.

Grandpa appreciated professionalism.

Then…

Tick.

Grandpa looked around.

“What was that?”

Grandma smiled.

“The clock.”

Grandpa relaxed.

For almost twelve seconds.

Then…

Click.

“What now?”

“My lunchbox.”

Another minute passed.

Creak.

“What broke?”

“My seat.”

“It always makes that sound.”

Grandpa nodded.

Then quietly tightened the parachute straps.

Several flights later another noise appeared.

Pop.

Grandpa didn’t ask.

Experience had replaced curiosity.

He simply smiled.

Opened the door.

Waved politely.

And jumped.

The parachute opened perfectly.

As always.

Grandma circled above.

Taking notes.

Excellent stability.

Excellent descent.

Excellent husband.

Landing accuracy improving.

Grandpa floated peacefully through the clouds.

Several birds joined him.

One asked no questions.

This was appreciated.

An hour later Grandma landed beside him.

“Well?”

she asked.

Grandpa brushed dust from his jacket.

“The airplane is excellent.”

Grandma smiled.

“I knew it.”

Grandpa continued.

“But I still recommend carrying two parachutes.”

“Why?”

Grandma asked.

Grandpa looked at the sky.

“You never know when I’ll hear another clock.”

Grandma closed her notebook.

She had already written today’s report.

Airplane: Perfect.

Pilot: Excellent.

Tester: Working exactly as designed.

Livora, you absolutely delight me with your stories. I love your Bible studies as well. This just made me smile–two different people seeing the same situation from their own perspectives. Responding to the same situation differently, and yet both could be right. Really fun, my friend.

Thank you so much, Dayle. I love the way you noticed that neither Grandpa nor Grandma needed to be “more right” than the other. Sometimes the happiest adventures happen because different perspectives learn to travel together instead of competing.

And knowing Grandpa, he’ll probably keep packing two parachutes—just in case the clock decides to tick a little too enthusiastically next Saturday. 😊✈️
