The robot discovered the manual on a Tuesday.
This was unfortunate.
The robot had been operational for forty-three years.
Several important decisions had already been made.
Poorly.
The manual was surprisingly thick.
Page one contained a sentence that changed everything.
“For best performance, occasional maintenance is recommended.”
The robot stared at the page.
Then at its own elbow.
Part of the elbow had become decorative rust.
The robot continued reading.
Page seven explained proper posture.
Page twelve explained battery conservation.
Page twenty-three explained that unusual noises were generally not ideal.
This eliminated most of the robot’s personality.
By afternoon, the robot had reached the troubleshooting section.
Problem: Unit appears confused.
The robot felt personally attacked.
A few pages later it discovered something even worse.
Several features had never been activated.
Not because they were broken.
Because nobody had read the instructions.
Including the robot.
Especially the robot.
This explained many things.
It explained the wrong turns.
The strange habits.
The incident involving a garden hose and a toaster.
The less said about that, the better.
For a while, the robot felt embarrassed.
Then it noticed the publication date.
The manual was older than the rust.
Which seemed equally irresponsible.
By evening, the robot reached the final chapter.
It expected wisdom.
It expected technical brilliance.
Instead it found a small note.
“Learning may occur later than expected.”
The robot sat quietly for several minutes.
Then nodded.
That seemed fair.
After all, forty-three years late was still technically later.
The lamp continued glowing.
The robot continued reading.
And somewhere between the missing screws and the faded pages, it discovered something comforting.
It wasn’t broken.
It was simply operating on several assumptions that had never been fact-checked.
