Livora Gracely

Writing to remember, sharing to inspire

When I was young, I had a remarkable talent.

I could explain the future with complete confidence.

Everything made sense back then.

The important things seemed obvious.

The difficult things seemed temporary.

The mysterious things appeared determined to introduce themselves eventually.

I was especially good at making plans.

Long plans.

Detailed plans.

Plans involving destinations, achievements, and several dramatic moments where everyone would finally realize I had been correct all along.

The future listened politely.

Then did something else.

Years later, I discovered a curious pattern.

The best friendships were not on the list.

The funniest memories were never scheduled.

Several important lessons arrived disguised as inconveniences.

And some of the doors that changed everything were originally mistaken for wrong turns.

None of this was particularly fair.

It was, however, surprisingly interesting.

Looking back, I still admire that younger version of myself.

Such confidence.

Such certainty.

Such absolutely magnificent misunderstandings.

Fortunately, youth comes with a useful feature.

You do not yet know how many things are impossible.

Which is why you spend so much time discovering they aren’t.

This is wonderful. Life rarely follows our plans, yet some of God’s greatest blessings arrive through the very detours we never would have chosen. Sometimes the wrong turn becomes the road we were meant to travel. 🙏🏻❤️

      Willie,

That thought about detours becoming blessings feels very close to the heart of the piece.

So many roads that once looked like interruptions reveal themselves later as part of the journey we actually needed.

Thank you for sharing that perspective.

Beautifully written Livora! ✨I especially loved the line, ‘The future listened politely, then did something else.’ So true and wonderfully expressed. ✨🤍🌷

      nihshabdblog,

      Thank you.

I smiled while writing that line, mostly because the future has repeated that pattern far more often than I once expected.

I’m glad that particular sentence found a place to stay with you.

What a gentle irony life reveals with time.

In youth, we believe wisdom lies in certainty; in maturity, we discover it often lives in surprise. The future rarely follows our maps, yet it has an uncanny way of leading us where we most need to go.

Perhaps the purpose of our plans is not to predict the journey, but to begin it. The wrong turns become teachers, the inconveniences become blessings, and the unfinished answers become the very source of wonder.

The younger self dreamed of controlling the future; the older self learns to collaborate with it.

And maybe that is wisdom not knowing exactly where the road leads, but walking it with curiosity, humility, and gratitude.

      Vijay,

I especially appreciated your distinction between controlling the future and collaborating with it.

There is a humility in that shift that often seems to arrive only after enough years have rearranged our carefully constructed expectations.

Thank you for adding such a thoughtful companion reflection to the conversation.

      kwholley63,

That may be one of the nicest compliments a reflective piece can receive.

If it encouraged a little looking back and a little thoughtful wandering through old memories, then it has already done more than enough.

      Thank you for sharing that.

      Gerry,

      Thank you.

Some wisdom arrives loudly, but the most cherished kind often seems to appear quietly after enough years have passed.

      bridge2nature,

There really is something remarkable about looking back and discovering that life unfolded very differently than expected.

Thank you for sharing that reflection.
