Writing to remember, sharing to inspire

Lightweight Qualifications

Some children spend years learning how to walk.

This one apparently skipped several chapters and went directly into flight.

Nobody knows exactly when the balloons became stronger than gravity. The child certainly didn’t ask for an explanation. Children rarely do. They simply accept impossible things with alarming professionalism.

The balloons looked perfectly ordinary.

The child looked perfectly ordinary.

Together, however, they had become a transportation system.

There are days when five balloons and unreasonable optimism seem like perfectly responsible travel arrangements.

Especially when the destination is somewhere above the clouds.

Three-Wheel Aviation

Technically, the bicycle possesses three wheels.

Emotionally, it possesses wings.

The child pedals with complete confidence despite being nowhere near the ground.

The bicycle never intended to become airborne. It merely discovered that dreams occasionally ignore engineering limitations.

Some mornings begin with plans.

Others begin with curiosity.

The second category tends to produce more interesting stories.

A little momentum.

A small adventure.

And suddenly the road is much farther below than anyone expected.

Teddy Approved Travel

Air travel can be stressful.

That is why professionals recommend bringing emotional support bears.

The child hugs a small brown teddy with the seriousness of someone protecting valuable cargo. The teddy appears equally committed to the arrangement.

Neither one seems worried about altitude.

The teddy has no pilot training.

The child has no flight training.

Yet both seem remarkably confident about the situation.

Perhaps friendship has always been a form of transportation.

Some journeys simply happen faster when nobody travels alone.

Premium Cloud Seating

The chair is yellow.

The headphones are yellow.

The mood is aggressively comfortable.

The balloons handle transportation.

The music handles atmosphere.

Everything appears to be operating exactly as intended.

The child sits several feet above the ground with the calm confidence of someone who has accidentally upgraded to first class.

A cloud drifts by.

A song continues playing.

The afternoon stretches itself a little longer.

Nobody seems in a hurry to improve anything.

      Joy,

I suspect the balloons were having far more fun than the child.

Thank you for stopping by and sharing a smile with the little airborne traveler.

      Ali,

The child would be delighted to hear that.

From that altitude, the entire afternoon seemed to be operating at peak efficiency already.

      Willie,

I’m glad a little of that wonder made its way through.

Children have a remarkable ability to treat impossible things as perfectly reasonable, and somehow that makes the world feel a little larger again.

Thank you for flying along for a few minutes.

How happy children are! One thing caught my attention. Children really don’t ask for explanations; they accept what seemed impossible šŸŽˆšŸ§ø Acceptance is something adults could rediscover, don’t you think? Thank you and have a good weekend!

      Carolina e Catarina,

That thought stayed with me too.

Children often seem less concerned with explaining every possibility and more interested in exploring it.

There may be something quietly valuable in that kind of openness.

      Thank you for sharing it.

      Sumita,

There is something refreshing about the way children move through the world.

They often carry curiosity where adults carry explanations.

Thank you for sharing that thought.

Your pericope could be derived by observation but the depth of your writing tells me you lived the dream, in good times and hard times. you will always be the helium, wings and an ark of friendship to those closest to you. Simply wonderful.

      Gerry,

That is a very generous comment.

I smiled at the image of helium, wings, and friendship all appearing in the same sentence.

Sometimes a few balloons, a teddy bear, and a little imagination seem capable of carrying far more than anyone expects.

      Thank you for your kindness.

My response to this post is probably not what you intended. I entirely agree that children need dreams, that dreams propel them forward into the future.

But I did a great deal of work w/ the poor, and their dreams were part of the problem. Dreams that might be attained w/ hard work and opportunity are often denied the children of the poor. Instead, they create unattainable fantasies.

These are beautiful chimera. A boy will become a famous rapper. A girl will become a film star, applauded worldwide. Prince Charming will ride up on a white horse, diamond ring in hand.

Such dreams are seductive. Few, however, will achieve them achieve because they are not goals. The intervening steps do not exist. Real opportunities are missed. School seems to lead nowhere, so is abandoned early. Love comes in the form of a teen pregnancy.

I’m sorry to go off on a rant, Livora. Your posts always make me thoughtful.

      Anna,

      No apology needed.

What you shared comes from experiences that are very real, and I can understand why the image of dreams would lead you there.

I think one of the remarkable things about stories is that people sometimes arrive carrying different roads behind them.

Thank you for sharing part of yours.

I’m glad the balloons and their very questionable transportation system brought a little fun to your day.
