Part 2 — The Climb Before Knowing
The crowd did not make space.
What had drawn them together now held them close—shoulder to shoulder, step within step—until movement no longer opened a way, but quietly closed it. What passed through the city could be followed, but not easily seen.
He tried.
Once—
then again.
Each step forward met the same resistance. What others received by simply standing remained just beyond him, not because it was far, but because it could not be reached from where he stood.
The closer he moved,
the less he saw.
It was not distance that kept him back.
It was presence—
the presence of those who had already arrived.
He did not stand alone.
And yet, he was alone in it.
He could hear what others heard.
He could sense what had drawn them.
But what they could see
did not open to him.
He paused.
Not because the way was unclear,
but because it no longer yielded.
There are moments when effort does not fail—
but simply does not lead further.
He had come this far.
Far enough to know
that remaining would not change what he could see.
Something in him shifted.
Not away from what he sought,
but away from how he had been seeking.
He turned.
Not back—
but ahead.
He moved along the road that had not yet filled, leaving behind what had gathered, stepping into a space where the crowd had not yet arrived. The noise softened. The press of bodies loosened. What had blocked him no longer stood before him.
And there, where nothing had yet formed, he found what would hold him above what had held him back.
A tree.
Not hidden.
Not chosen for meaning.
Only for what it allowed.
He did not linger.
He climbed.
Not with certainty.
Not with understanding.
But with a willingness that no longer measured how it might appear.
What could not be reached from below
would now be waited for from above.
And there he remained.
Not among them,
not within them,
but beyond what had once kept him outside.
The road lay open beneath him.
The crowd had not yet arrived.
For the first time, what he sought would not be hidden by what stood before him.
He had found a place from which to see—
but what would meet him there
did not begin with him.
