Part 5 — No Longer Asked
The road had spoken.
Not in a way that required agreement, nor in a form that asked to be carried as an idea. What had unfolded did not return to be explained. It remained where it had been seen, complete in itself, not awaiting interpretation.
The question, once placed forward, no longer stood where it had begun.
It had not been answered directly.
It had not been resolved within the boundaries that first held it.
And yet, it did not remain unanswered.
“Which of these…”
The words did not continue immediately.
They did not press toward a conclusion.
They waited—
not for something new to be added,
but for what had already been shown
to be recognized.
“…proved to be a neighbor?”
The question had changed.
It no longer asked where the line should be drawn.
It did not search for a definition that could be held apart from what had been seen.
It turned.
Not outward,
but inward.
Not toward who should be included,
but toward who had become.
The answer did not hesitate.
It did not reach for explanation, nor did it attempt to restate what had been told.
“The one who showed mercy.”
Nothing more was added.
Nothing needed to be.
What had been seen did not require further words to sustain it.
It did not need to be strengthened by reasoning, nor secured by agreement.
It stood.
Then came the final word.
Not extended.
Not reinforced.
Simply placed.
“Go… and do likewise.”
There was no instruction attached to it.
No outline to follow.
No measure given to ensure it had been done.
What had been shown was not returned as something to be analyzed.
It was left as it was—
to be entered,
or to be passed.
The road remained open.
The movement had been seen.
And somewhere—
not on the road,
but above a house once made ready—
a space had already stood.
Not for need.
Not for urgency.
Not even for loss.
Simply prepared.
Here, on the road,
no room had been built.
No walls.
No door.
No bed waiting.
And yet,
space was made.
Not by structure,
but by stopping.
Not by design,
but by drawing near.
What had once been given quietly within a house
now appeared,
unannounced,
in the open.
The form had changed.
The place had shifted.
But the movement remained.
What followed did not depend on what was added,
but on whether anything would now change.

CODA — Still There
The road remains as it has always been, not holding what passes through it and not keeping what has taken place upon it.
Nothing marks the place.
What once lay there does not remain in form, and no trace is set to return to. The ground does not gather what has passed over it, nor does it keep what cannot be held.
And yet, nothing has been removed.
What was seen does not stay on the road, but neither does it disappear. It does not remain where it occurred, and it does not return as something to be kept.
Others will come.
They will walk the same ground, with nothing before them that compels them beyond what they already are. The road will not instruct them. It will not interrupt their steps.
It will remain.
As it was.
As it is.
And still, what comes upon it does not come from a distance.
It is already there—within reach, without announcement, not set apart from the way itself.
Somewhere, a space had once been made without need.
Here, nothing is prepared.
Only the road.
Open.
Unmarked.
Unchanged.
Nothing in it determines what will follow.
It remains.
And what happens upon it does not begin there,
and does not end there.
