The Mathematics of Divine Awe.
There is a Magnetic North embedded deep within the human soul, the irresistible, sovereign presence of God. This Divine Pull has always existed, silently governing the universe, yet the manner of its manifestation has shifted profoundly. The journey of faith chronicles this evolution, from a consuming, overwhelming power to an intimate, accessible grace. We trace this magnetic current back to its first, fearful revelation, setting the stage for the radical transformation to come.
The Trembling Mountain.
Our story begins in the shadow of Sinai, where God’s magnetism was pure, terrifying power. The mountain quaked; fire flashed. God’s holiness was a consuming reality, demanding absolute awe and keeping people at a fearful distance. The Israelites understood the lethal truth: untainted light is too much for the broken vessel of man. They begged Moses to mediate, instinctively seeking separation from the glory they could not bear to approach.
The Fickle Heart’s Failure.
Yet, this profound awe proved fleeting. The human heart, a creature of deep contradiction, swiftly abandoned the terrifying, unseen power for the comforting, man-made idol. The gold began to glitter. This tragic exchange of cosmic reverence for earthly reassurance showed the flaw in the first encounter. The sheer force of separation could not hold the fragile spirit tethered to the Infinite. A new, more intimate magnetism was required to overcome this deep-seated human failure.
The Incarnate Invitation.
Centuries later, the Pull underwent its beautiful metamorphosis. The consuming fire took human form. In Jesus, the Divine Magnetism ceased to repel the unworthy; it became an irresistible embrace. There was no smoke, no trumpet, but the gentle, authoritative voice of the Incarnate Invitation. God no longer waited for a mediator; He became the bridge, drawing in the small, the sinful, and the broken whom the world rejected and scorned.
The Shift to Intimate Trust.
Jesus’s presence redefined the divine encounter, changing it from a fearful, trembling duty to a welcoming, personal desire. He was the magnet drawing the broken pieces, not to judge the flaws, but to initiate healing. He transformed the encounter from a frightening display of power to a profound experience of being seen and deeply trusted. The distance was annihilated by the intimacy of the Incarnation, making the Unapproachable accessible to all who sought Him.
The Current of Grace.
This transformation is the blueprint for our lives. The lightning flash has been replaced by the quiet current of grace within the soul. We are called to surrender the ego’s control—our final golden calf—and lean into the sacred space created by Christ. The journey to meet the Awesome God is now merely the journey inward. Stop striving and simply abide. Let the fear of the mountain dissolve into the trusting quiet of the heart.
