Writing to remember, sharing to inspire

The Witness of the Word
  • “Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.” (Luke 16:29)
  • “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
  • “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” (Romans 10:17)

Introduction

In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, even the plea for a miracle—someone rising from the dead—was denied. The answer was firm: “They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen.” The Word itself is sufficient. Christ Himself later fulfilled this truth, for even His resurrection did not convince hardened hearts. Scripture, the testimony of prophets, and the witness of the apostles remain God’s chosen instrument to call humanity back from folly and division.

Historical Anchor

The Jewish people were entrusted with the oracles of God—Scripture was their inheritance. Yet history shows how often they resisted its call. The same dynamic remains: when Christ rose from the dead, many still refused to believe. Miracles do not soften hearts where the Word is ignored. Across centuries, the Bible has outlasted empires, heresies, and persecutions, standing as an enduring witness. Where it is heeded, walls crumble and lives are transformed. Where it is dismissed, humanity rebuilds its feuds and exclusions.

Two Famous Quotes
  • Charles Spurgeon : “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”
  • Amy Carmichael : “Never let good books take the place of the Bible. Drink from the well, not from the streams that flow from the well.”

Conclusion

The Word of God is not a supplement—it is the foundation. It alone reveals Christ, exposes sin, dismantles pride, and builds true peace. To ignore it is to choose blindness; to receive it is to be remade into the new humanity Christ intended. Scripture is not merely ink on paper but the living voice of God, testifying to His reconciling work in Christ.

Present Challenge

In our modern world, Scripture often lies unread while people chase after signs, experiences, or philosophies. We treat the Word as optional, while rebuilding walls of arrogance and exclusion. The challenge is to return to the witness already given: the Law, the Prophets, the Gospels, the Apostolic letters. If God was willing to stoop and speak through them, how can we neglect so great a gift? The task of our generation is to let the Word shape our unity, dissolve our rivalries, and point us back to the cross where peace was made.

That really made me laugh. You should see my Bible! My late husband bought it for me for Mother’s Day in 1984. I read Spurgeon every day and have not read that one. Yes, it has fallen apart. It is in 2 pieces, but I love it and I know where everything is. I must not be falling apart though at times I have, and the Lord had to put me back together. Thank you Livora!
