One little sip. A whole morning inside.

Something Yellow

Lio found the yellow thing before breakfast.

It was inside a drop of dew, hanging from the tip of a blade of grass. He held the blade with both hands and leaned close. The drop was round and clear, and near its middle was a tiny splash of yellow.

“Tansy!” he called.

Tansy came across the moss with a pink petal beneath one arm.

“What have you found?”

“Look inside.”

She bent beside him. The blade dipped under Lio’s hands, and the drop trembled.

“I see green,” she said.

“Yellow.”

“Perhaps we’re looking at different drops.”

Lio pointed to the one at the tip. Smaller drops clung farther down the blade.

“That one,” he said.

Tansy looked again. “Still green.”

From Tansy’s Side

Lio shifted towards her. The blade followed him, and the drop swung gently.

“Careful,” Tansy said. She set down her petal and held the lower part of the grass steady.

Lio looked into the drop once more. The yellow had become a thin line, with green on either side.

“It moved,” he said.

“Did the thing inside move?”

They watched. A breeze widened the yellow line. It narrowed when the blade settled.

Tansy crouched behind Lio and looked over his shoulder. “I can see a little yellow now.”

Lio turned to her. “Where did it go?”

“I’m still here.”

“Not you. The yellow.”

She laughed and moved beside him. From there, she could see only green again. Lio held the blade as still as he could while Tansy leaned back, then forward.

“Yellow,” she said. “Green. Yellow again.”

Behind her grew a small yellow flower. Lio pointed at it, and Tansy turned around.

“Could that be what we’re seeing?” she asked.

They looked from the flower to the drop. Tansy moved so that she no longer stood between them. Lio could see the yellow clearly again.

One, Two…

“Your turn,” Lio said.

Tansy placed her cheek beside his. Together they looked into the drop. For a moment, a little yellow shape shone near its middle.

“There!” she said.

Lio smiled. “The flower came inside.”

“Or we found a way to see it there.”

He leaned closer. The drop was large enough for a little sip, and he had not had his breakfast yet.

“Shall we look once more first?” Tansy asked. “I’ll count. One, two—”

Lio’s fingers slipped slightly on the smooth blade. The drop rolled to the very end, stretched, and fell into the moss.

“Three,” he said.

Tansy peered down. A dark, round patch marked where the drop had landed, but she could no longer see the little flower inside it.

“I think it finished before I did,” she said.

Lio looked at the empty tip of the blade. Then he noticed the smaller drops still clinging farther down.

The Flower Behind Them

Tansy picked up her pink petal and placed it on the moss beside them. Lio sat on its edge while she gently bent another blade towards him.

This one carried three small drops. He touched the lowest with his lips and tasted the cool water. The other two stayed where they were.

“Breakfast?” Tansy asked.

Lio nodded. Then he pointed past her.

The yellow flower stood in the morning light, taller than both of them. Its petals were open, and a tiny beetle rested near the centre.

“Can you see it now?” he asked.

“All of it.”

They sat together on the pink petal. Lio watched the beetle take a slow step across the flower. Beside him, Tansy held the grass blade steady until he was ready for another sip.
