Some hearts are bigger than courage.
They simply need a smaller voice.
The leopard had already said no.
Politely.
Twice.
He was perfectly happy being a leopard.
He had no interest in hats, speeches, plans, or tiny visitors carrying even tinier walking sticks.
The mouse returned anyway.
Not with louder arguments.
With a different hat.
He believed important conversations deserved proper hats.
This week’s choice was a blue one with a feather almost taller than himself.
The leopard watched patiently while the mouse climbed onto a smooth stone.
He spun his little stick once.
Twice.
Three times.
The stick never made the speech better.
It simply helped the mouse remember where his brave thoughts were.
“I’ve brought you an invitation.”
“I already declined.”
“I know.”
“So why are you back?”
“Because yesterday you answered before hearing today’s reason.”
The leopard blinked.
That seemed unexpectedly fair.
The mouse carefully unfolded the smallest letter anyone had ever attempted to read aloud.
“The village is opening a Listening Garden.”
The leopard tilted his head.
“I don’t know anything about listening.”
The mouse smiled.
“Exactly.”
Everyone else already thinks they do.”
For a long while, neither of them spoke.
A butterfly crossed between them as if checking whether the meeting was still in progress.
Finally, the leopard stood.
“Suppose I visit.”
The mouse straightened his hat with enormous dignity.
“I was hoping you’d say that.”
“What happens in a Listening Garden?”
The mouse looked thoughtfully at the little stick in his paw.
“I’ve never been.”
“I only know they become easier to find after two people decide to listen.”
The garden did not appear that afternoon.
Nor the next.
But people in the village noticed something curious.
Whenever conversations became too hurried, someone would quietly twirl an imaginary little stick before speaking.
No one remembered who started the habit.
The leopard never admitted it.
The mouse never needed to.
And somehow, everyone seemed to hear each other just a little longer.
