Christmas Begins Where Control Ends
Christmas rarely begins the way we decorate it.
Not with candles, choirs, or curated warmth—but with interruption. The biblical Christmas story opens in darkness, uncertainty, and vulnerability. Heaven does not knock politely; it invades human routines. God does not wait until people feel ready—He arrives when they are afraid. That is why the first divine sentence spoken into the Christmas narrative is not “Rejoice” but “Do not be afraid.”

Fear is not accidental in the nativity story; it is diagnostic.
Zechariah trembles in the temple. Mary is troubled by a greeting too holy for comfort. Joseph wrestles in silence with shame and obedience. Shepherds freeze under a sky suddenly torn open by glory. Fear exposes a shared truth: humanity realizes it is no longer in control. And Scripture never mocks this fear—it validates it. Encountering the living God should unsettle anyone who knows their own limits.

The shepherds, in particular, represent a quiet theology of self-reliance.
They are night-watchers, professionals of vigilance, men trained to trust their own alertness. Life has taught them that safety depends on staying awake, guarding well, and expecting danger. When glory appears, it does not meet philosophers or kings—but workers who believe survival rests on their own watchfulness. Their fear is not weakness; it is the collapse of the illusion that they were ever enough.

This is where Christmas truly begins.
Not when humans feel strong, spiritual, or deserving—but when they stop pretending. “Do not be afraid” is not a command to suppress emotion; it is an invitation to release control. Christmas starts the moment humanity admits it cannot save itself, and heaven responds—not with condemnation, but with nearness. Fear becomes the doorway, not the disqualification, for glory to enter the world.

This is so true. Christmas begins when we let go of control and admit we need God. Fear isn’t rejected, it becomes the doorway where His nearness and grace enter.

Willie, your words arrived gently, and they matter more than I can express. To see you here for the fourth time today is a profound gift; your generosity of heart in supporting this “infant blog” as it learns to find its stride is a kindness I will never forget. You have truly become a cornerstone of this community, and I am deeply moved by the way you consistently champion these reflections.

Thank you for being the wind beneath the wings of this space; may God Himself repay your immense kindness and faithful support. I wish you a Christmas where His presence is your greatest comfort, and as you step into 2026, may you walk with a renewed strength and the steady guidance of His hand in every moment.
