Living Choice

Genesis 19:26
Luke 17:32–33
Hebrews 10:39

Introduction

The story of Lot’s wife stands as a solemn warning: salvation requires not only deliverance but perseverance. As judgment fell upon Sodom, she looked back and became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). Jesus Himself commanded, “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32), making her fate a timeless lesson. Her backward glance revealed divided loyalty, a heart still tethered to a doomed city. In contrast, the faithful are called to press forward in hope, not shrinking back, but believing to the saving of their souls (Hebrews 10:39).

Historical Reality

The destruction of Sodom was well known in Jewish tradition and surrounding cultures. Josephus records that the land bore evidence of sulfur and ash, testifying to the devastation. Lot’s wife became a lasting sign, a monument of warning for all generations. Ancient travelers even spoke of a salt pillar near the Dead Sea, associated with her fate. For the early Church, this account was no myth—it was a tangible reminder that divided hearts cannot stand when judgment comes.

Notable Quotes

John Wesley (man): “The Church changes the world not by making converts but by making disciples.”
Amy Carmichael (woman): “We have all eternity to celebrate our victories, but only one short hour before sunset to win them.”

Conclusion

Lot escaped Sodom, but his wife perished because she could not let go. Her story teaches us that deliverance is not complete until we press forward in obedience. The Christian journey requires leaving behind what is condemned in order to embrace the new creation in Christ. The choice remains clear: will we be like Lot, running into mercy, or like his wife, frozen forever in longing for what God has judged?

Contemporary Challenge

In today’s world, many believers live torn between two kingdoms—drawn by Christ’s call yet reluctant to release worldly attachments. The temptation to “look back” shows itself in compromise, materialism, and nostalgia for sin’s fleeting pleasures. The Church must sound the warning, urging believers to fix their eyes on Christ and not on what is perishing. Each generation must decide: will we press forward into God’s promise, or turn back and become monuments of regret?

Lots life was of the flesh, looking back on the earthly things she was leaving and loving. Romans 8:13 KJV
[13] For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

True, for Allah is the Eternal, and all besides Him will perish. Blessed is the one whose heart clings to the Everlasting and is not deceived by the fleeting.
