Writing to remember, sharing to inspire

True Allegiance
  • “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)
  • “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1)
  • “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

Introductory Thought

Armies often rise and fall depending on whom they follow.

A great general may inspire, but even the bravest leader is mortal.

Allegiance misplaced in men alone leads to disappointment or betrayal.

In history, soldiers who swore blind loyalty to kings were left devastated when those rulers fell. But those who bound themselves to a higher cause endured. So too in the Church: our allegiance is not ultimately to Peter, Paul, or Apollos, but to the Commander-in-Chief—Christ.

Historical Reliability

In Corinth, factions arose: “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas.”

Paul rebuked this sharply, reminding them that neither he nor Apollos was crucified for them.

Ancient historians recount how divided loyalties crippled armies; at Philippi, Roman troops split their devotion between Brutus and Cassius, leading to ruin. In contrast, when loyalty united under a single, legitimate leader, victory followed. The early Church understood this: while they respected apostles, they worshipped only Christ.

Quotations

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists.
When his work is done, they will say: we did it ourselves.”
— Lao Tzu

“He who serves two masters, serves none.”
— Latin proverb

Conclusion

The strength of Christ’s army lies not in personalities but in the unshakable allegiance to its true Commander.

Pastors, prophets, and teachers are gifts for the Church, but they are not the foundation.

When we place our hope on human leaders, we build on sand; when we root ourselves in Christ, the Rock, we cannot be shaken. Paul modeled this perfectly: “Follow me, as I follow Christ.” He did not invite loyalty to himself, but to the Christ who saved him.

Contemporary Challenge

Today’s Church is tempted to celebrity leadership, where charisma eclipses Christ.

Movements rise and fall with their figureheads, leaving believers scattered.

Our challenge is to cultivate discernment: to honor leaders, but never idolize them; to obey human shepherds, but test every spirit against Christ’s Word; to stand faithful even if earthly leaders fall.

True allegiance is not blind loyalty—it is discerning devotion to the living King.

Fascinating perspective. I like how you connect historical examples with the early Church to highlight the difference between loyalty to people and loyalty to Christ. The reminder that leadership is a gift but not the foundation feels particularly relevant today, especially in an era where charisma can easily overshadow substance. It’s a thoughtful call to cultivate discernment and keep our focus on the ultimate Commander rather than on human personalities.
