The New House and the New Order
(οἶκος τοῦ Θεοῦ / oikos tou Theou – Greek: “the household of God”)
- Ephesians 2:19–20 –
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” - Hebrews 3:6 –
“But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.” - 1 Peter 2:5 –
“You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
New Dwelling
When reconciliation occurs, it does not leave us wandering without direction.
Instead, God invites us into His household (οἶκος τοῦ Θεοῦ), where a new order governs life. The old structures—based on law, ethnicity, or human tradition—are set aside. In their place, Christ establishes a new dwelling where His Spirit resides, and His people become living stones in a spiritual temple.
This “house” is not bound by walls of Jerusalem’s temple or any earthly sanctuary, but is alive wherever God’s people gather under Christ’s lordship.
Living Stones
For the Jewish people of the first century, the temple was central to identity and worship.
Josephus describes its grandeur and the way it structured Jewish life.
Yet Jesus foretold its destruction (Mark 13:2), which came to pass in A.D. 70. This historical event confirmed what the apostles were already proclaiming: God’s presence was no longer confined to stone and ritual but was dwelling in His people through the Holy Spirit. Paul, Peter, and James all affirmed this new reality, demonstrating that the “house of God” was no longer a place, but a people.
Quotes
“We are all one family in the world. Building a community that empowers everyone to succeed requires a new order of love.”
— Pope John Paul II
“The most important work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes.”
— Mother Teresa
New Belonging
The new house and order of God transforms how we view belonging.
We are not outsiders or strangers; we are sons and daughters, priests and stones, woven together into God’s dwelling place.
Christ is the cornerstone, ensuring that this structure will never collapse. What once divided—Jew and Gentile, male and female, slave and free—has been abolished in Christ. The church is not simply an organization but the living household of God.
Present Challenge
Today, many still cling to old “houses” of identity—ethnic pride, denominational walls, or cultural barriers—that prevent true unity.
The temptation is to rebuild walls that Christ has already torn down.
To restore the vision of the new household, believers must embrace their identity not in human categories but in Christ.
This requires humility, submission to the Spirit, and a willingness to live as one family. The world longs for such a house, where love and justice rule, and where the peace of Christ is visible.
